Native American turquoise sterling silver Ogre kachina bolo tie, signed THOMAS BYRD by the Navajo artist, stamped STERLING and RED MESA, and marked/numbered, 90 K 17. This exquisite bolo tie showcases a beautifully crafted 3-D Sterling silver kachina, that considering the horns, the bow and arrow, and the chomping jaws, appears to be the Black Nataska Ogre, who in the Native legend, accompany Soyoko on her trip to collect food from the children, and to make sure they help out with chores and corn crops. This intricate piece showcases 3 gorgeous, rich blue turquoise stones set in serrated bezels and placed over the horns and headdress. The bow, blade, and the other silver piece are held by a bale and have some movement. The silver has exceptional etching, deep stamps on the face of the dancer, and other details that bring this kachina to life. The largest headdress center turquoise is roughly 1" tall by 9/16" wide, from bezel to bezel, the side stones are a bit smaller. The slide is 3 7/8" tall, top to bottom, not counting the dangles, by about 3 3/4" wide. The cord grip is a double hoop (double holes) style. The cord and dressings, including the heavy-gauge Hopi tips, are all original and are in great shape. Dark patina- we do not clean or polish our pieces as most collectors prefer them as-is. The cord is roughly 41" long, including the 2 3/4" tips. This magnificent bolo weighs a total of 191.5 grams, almost 7 oz!! Our vendor informed us that this piece was produced in the 1970s, which appears to be correct as this design and work became famous in the 70s and some of our other kachina dancers, similar to this one, are dated accordingly. This piece is not dated. Definitely a must-have for any collector of Native American bolo ties and/or kachinas.
Thank you for supporting authentic Native American art.
