THOMAS BYRD Native American Navajo Sterling Silver Ogre Kachina Bolo Tie 1970s, signed by the artist, stamped STERLING and RED MESA, and marked/numbered "93 M 20 USA".
This exquisite bolo tie showcases a beautifully crafted 3-D sterling silver kachina, that considering the horns and the bow and arrow, appears to be the Black Nataska Ogre, who in the Native legend, accompany Soyoko on her trip to collect food from the children, and to make sure they help out with chores and corn crops. This is an intricate slide and some of the pieces are secured by a bale to allow for some movement. The silver has exceptional etching, deep stamps, and other exceptional details. The slide is about 3 7/8" tall, top to bottom, by about 3 5/8" wide. The cord grip is a double hoop (double holes) style, and may require a little adjustment to hold the cord a bit tighter due to its heavy weight. The cord and dressings (sleeves or ferrules, including the heavy-gauge Hopi tips, are all original and are fairly good shape with only a few minor dents. One of the tips does have a single large ding, please see photos for more details. Light patina- we do not clean or polish our pieces as most collectors prefer them as-is, but this piece was either well-kept or it's been cleaned by the previous owner. The total weight is 178.8 grams, almost 6.5 oz.!! It's definitely a must-have for any collector of Native American bolo ties and/or kachinas.
Thank you for supporting authentic Native American art.
