The Tarot of Marseilles is steeped in history. It is one of the oldest decks created, which historians believe to have been in the 15th century. It is thought to have been invented in Northern Italy and then introduced into France, where it became a popular card game. Many of the tarot decks we see to this day are derived from the Marseilles deck.
