please select “yes” on the hold for pickup option
. It is also a good idea to select "yes" on the hold for pickup option if you cannot pick up the mealworms as soon as it is delivered. Mealworms cannot tolerate hot or cold temperatures, which means that
having them sit in the mailbox or porch for a long time could lead to dead worms
. Every shipment will contain 15% of extra mealworms to account for any dead mealworms upon arrival. Should there be more than 15% mealworms dead upon arrival, please take a photo and send it to us within 24 hours of receiving the package. Depending on the number of dead mealworms, we will provide you with either a refund or reorder.

Instructions on how to take care of mealworms
If you are planning to not refrigerate the mealworms, they will need to be placed into a Sterilite container or cup full of wheat bran. Wheat bran acts as both a substrate and food and helps to keep your mealworms happy and fed. To provide moisture for your mealworms, you can choose between adding carrots and potatoes. Add only enough carrots and potatoes so that the mealworms can eat within one day, as adding too much can cause the uneaten vegetables to become moldy. Once the vegetables are finished by the mealworms (approximately one day) replenish their supply of carrots or potatoes.
If you are planning to refrigerate the mealworms, you can mostly follow the same procedures as mentioned above. The only difference is that now the Sterilite container or cup will be placed into your refrigerator and must be kept above 45
    °
    F
    . 45

or below will cause the mealworms to die upon thawing. To ensure that the refrigerator is not too cold, use a thermometer and change the settings of your refrigerator to the appropriate temperature. You can also place the mealworms on the shelf that is the farthest away from the refrigerator vent, which is usually located at the top (if this is the case, the place the mealworms on the lower shelf). The colder temperatures will slow the metabolism of the mealworms, causing them to age and eat slower. However, the mealworms will need some moisture after some time in the refrigerator. After approximately 1.5 weeks, take the mealworms out of the refrigerator and allow them to thaw for a few hours. After a few hours has passed, add some carrots or potatoes and allow the mealworms to eat the vegetables for moisture. Once the vegetables are finished, place the mealworms back into the refrigerator. Repeat this procedure once every 1.5 weeks.
