Description
This is a mid Taisho Era (c. 1920) chabako (tansu chest for
Chado
tea ceremony) complete with tea wares as seen.
Within the chabako there are 3 removable shelves (see picture 7). It is made completely out of
kiri
(paulownia) wood. It has bronze fittings including a top handle sturdy enough to securely carry this chest (see picture 2) and a locking latch at the top to secure and lock the door in place (see pictures 5 & 11).
The front lid lifts easily out of a lower grooved area on the front of the box. The box is made of light weight
kiri
(paulownia) in traditional old world craftsmanship with wooden pinned lap joints (see last picture).
Included with this chest are two ceramic chawan (tea bowls), a lidded mizusashi (water vessel) and a bamboo water scoop (all as seen in pictures 1, 8, 9, & 10).
Having been in storage for over 80 years and used lovingly, this chabako (tea tansu) as well as its contents remain in
excellent condition.
The chabako measures 8" wide by 17" high by 7" deep (20 x 43 x 18 cm). A comparable stocked chabako sells in Tokyo for 4 to 5 hundred today.
